Testing for Tinnitus

To determine if tinnitus is linked to hearing loss, your audiologist will perform a physical exam and several tests, including:

  • Pure Tone Testing: Measures hearing at different frequencies and volumes, with results shown on an audiogram.
  • Middle Ear Testing: Assesses eardrum and middle ear function using air pressure and sound.
  • Speech Understanding: Tests how well you understand speech in quiet and noisy settings.
  • Otoacoustic Emissions: Measures hair cell movement in the middle ear.
  • Movement Test: Checks if specific movements affect tinnitus symptoms.
  • Pitch Match Testing: Matches the frequency of the sounds you hear.

Managing Tinnitus

Most cases don’t require medical treatment. If tinnitus is bothersome, masking techniques like background noise (e.g., a fan or radio) may help. If hearing loss is found, hearing aids can assist with both hearing and masking tinnitus.
